The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
In an allegory of life after General Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War, life in a remote Castilian village in the 1940s is calm and uneventful. The war had a profound effect on beekeeper and amateur mycologist Fernando (Fernando Fernán Gómez), his younger wife Teresa (Teresa Gimpera), and their two adolescent daughters Isabel and Ana (Isabel Tellería and Ana Torrent). One day, the two little girls see James Whale’s 1931 film Frankenstein and one of them starts wandering the countryside in search of this kind creature.
