Overview
Moulin Rouge! (2001) Classics at the Browning
While our other Summer Classics musicals focus on Oklahoma (Oklahoma!), New York City (Hello, Dolly!) or both (Hair), Moulin Rouge takes us fin de siècle Paris and the eponymous nightclub at the heart of its vibrant (and aggressively postmodern) bohemian art scene. A young Englishman (Ewan McGregor), having recently arrived in the country to follow his passion to write, becomes infatuated with Satine (Nicole Kidman), the world’s most famous can-can dancer. She, however, has been promised by her manager to a Duke in return for funding his next production. As the young lovers meet in secret, Satine's wedding day draws closer while hiding secrets from both Christian and the Duke.
