Jeannette: The Childhood of Joan of Arc (2017)

New at the Browning

One of the few films that combines a 15th century hagiography with children singing (as one might a responsorial psalm) and dancing to techno music. Before a future sainthood, though, we go to France in 1425. In the midst of the Hundred Years’ War, the young Jeannette, at the tender age of eight, looks after her sheep in the small village of Domremy. One day, she tells her friend Hauviette how she cannot bear to see the suffering caused by the English and begins to sing to God. Madame Gervaise, a nun, tries to reason with the young girl, but Jeannette is ready to take up arms for the salvation of souls and the liberation of the Kingdom of France. Carried by her faith, she will become Joan of Arc, who is the eponymous subject of Cary Dreyer's silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc screening at the Browning Cinema with a live score accompaniment on April 19 and 20.
