Fresh off the raging success his first film Ex Machina, director Alex Garland finds his second source material in the best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy written by Jeff VanderMeer. As with many recent science-fiction films, the traditional genre silo breaks down in this feature, which follows a team of women who go on an expedition into The Shimmer (think, somewhat, of The Zone in Tarkovsky’s Stalker), a mysterious and mutated/-ing zone removed from civilization that has devastated previous voyages into it, which serves, in part, as motivation for some members of the team to tackle it.
