Gimme Shelter (1970)

Nanovic Institute Film Series

One of the most famous and infamous concert films of all time, Gimme Shelter profiles the Rolling Stones' 1969 U.S. tour, the music they were making, and the atmosphere of the crowds they created. While a compilation of performances, the main focus of the film (and its legacy) involves a free concert at the Altamont Speedway in the Bay Area just as 1969 was closing. Performing alongside Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and Santana, the Rolling Stones attempted to bring the Woodstock experience to the West Coast, which makes the film a fascinating and tragic document of how manufactured peace and love can go awry.
