Learning Beyond the Classics: Films on Death Row

Learning Beyond the Classics: Films on Death Row

American views of law and order (and how the world views American law and order) have been shaped by courtroom melodramas, Oscar winners, true crime television series, documentary exposés—and literally the television franchise Law & Order.

In order to discuss how audiences have defined and still redefine various spaces and people within the criminal justice system, this Learning Beyond the Classics course zones in on a unique facet of the American criminal justice system: the death penalty.

We will unpack the history of capital punishment through film, allowing for a better sense of (1) how the criminal justice and entertainment industries have interplayed and (2) how media has been and might be used to address staggering inequalities and injustices found within the criminal justice system.

The $12 fee includes a package of one ticket to each screening in the series and access to the course readings, recorded lectures, and discussions. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are no refunds or exchanges for dates not attended.
