Learning Beyond the Classics: Abbas Kiarostami

Description

Often working within and around broad censorship, Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) directed playful and profound films that defined his generation of filmmakers, not just in Iran but globally. While Iranian films have received wider viewership in the United States during the last decade (thanks in part to Asghar Farhadi’s Academy Awards for A Separation and The Salesman), Kiarostami’s films remain largely unseen in South Bend despite critical raves and international laurels.

Let’s change that. Whether this will be your introduction to his work or another lap of appreciation, this series offers you an opportunity to understand film’s exhilarating potential through Kiarostami’s unique humanization of desire, despair, and joy.
