The Blackening (2023)
Learning Beyond the Classics
Directed by Tim Story
With Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg
Rated R, 97 minutes, DCP

With one of the best taglines in recent memory (“We can’t all die first”), The Blackening brings its own commentary to the recent run of social thrillers. With more levity than many of the films with which it may quickly be categorized, The Blackening still makes good on its central, skin-crawling premise: a group of friends are alone inside a cabin in the woods when a murderer hits the scene. With many references to other films, the group's awareness of horror films and the tropes found within the genre are crucial to their survival.
