Although not the only film with talking animals to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, Babe created its own distinct and large splash when it arrived from Australia in 1995. Gentle farmer Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) wins a piglet named Babe (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) at a county fair. Narrowly escaping his fate as Christmas dinner when Farmer Hoggett decides to show him at the next fair, Babe bonds with motherly border collie Fly and discovers that he too can herd sheep. Babe’s interspecific skills don’t jive with the other farm animals’ schemas (a pig who herds sheep!?), but the little piglet carries on. Soon, the farm’s entire social hierarchy is pulled into question by Babe, who must reconcile his yearning to belong with his passion.

Free for children 12 and under.
