Presenting Series
Fairy Tales, Chemistry, and Song
For the first time ever, 2017 Grammy nominees Third Coast Percussion performs songs for solo voice and percussion, with a stage full of instruments ranging from drums and marimbas to harmonicas, kalimbas, and whisky bottles. The program includes music by one of the 20th century's greatest composers, György Ligeti, a world premiere by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Christopher Cerrone, and works composed by members of Third Coast Percussion.
Peter Martin - Bend
This beautiful and light-hearted opener draws inspiration from the player piano compositions of Bruce Goff, a wonderfully unconventional architect and amateur composer.
Christopher Cerrone - Goldbeater's Skin (world premiere, commissioned by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting and the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center) w/guest artist Rachel Calloway, mezzo soprano. Text by poet GC Waldrep.
The four members of Third Coast Percussion surround the audience while the singer remains front and center. Beautiful, haunting melodies are interspersed with dramatic, lightning fast rhythms that swirl around the audience in this world premiere performance. Info on GC Waldrep's poem Goldbeater's Skin.
György Ligeti - Síppal, dobbal, nádihegeduvel w/guest artist Rachel Calloway, mezzo soprano. Text by poet Sándor Weöres.
The Hungarian composer mixes elements of folk music, fairy tales, meditation, and wry humor in this 20th century masterpiece. A translation of the text from the Ligeti piece.
Third Coast Percussion - Reaction Yield
Inspired by the process of chemical synthesis, whereby chemists combine different molecular elements to create everything from fertilizer and plastics to cures for fatal diseases. The members of Third Coast Percussion created a book of "musical elements" that they drew from to combine and synthesize into a musical work. Co-commissioned by the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.Third Coast Percussion at Notre Dame is made possible through the generosity of Shari and Tom
Crotty.
