Murder, My Sweet (1944)

RKO Classics

Based on Raymond Chandler’s 1940 novel, Farewell, My Lovely, the film’s title lets you know how lovely that ‘farewell’ is. Squarely in noir’s realm, private investigator Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) is hired by the oafish Moose Malloy to track down Moose’s former girlfriend Jessie. While on that case, he is also hired to accompany a suave playboy as a bodyguard and go-between for a midnight meeting to buy back some jewels. As midnight meetings involving a PI and stolen jewels often go, murder makes an appearance at the rendezvous. Marlowe can't seem to shake the case and soon realizes the interconnectedness of his docket. A mysterious blonde (Claire Trevor) then enters the scene, and the detective finds his own life to be in peril.
