Top Hat (1935)

RKO Classics

A screwball dance comedy with Fred and Ginger tripping the British light fantastic to Irving Berlin's music (e.g., Cheek to Cheek) in what was the most successful of their films together. Astaire plays Jerry Travers, an American dancer who lands in London and awakes Dale Tremont (Rogers) with his tap dancing. She confronts him and he is lovestruck. Unfortunately, a case of mistaken identity leads the socialite Dale to believe Jerry isn’t Jerry and is, instead, married. The two dance through Europe as the confusion colors the courtship with broad humor.

Free for ND, SMC and HC students.

Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Classic Cinema.
