Frantz (2016)

Nanovic Institute Film Series

Ernst Lubistch’s 1932 film, Broken Lullaby, is given an update by François Ozon, who swaps out his standard vivid color palette for the subdued tones of the 1930s. In the wake of World War I, a young German, Anna (Paula Beer), is in mourning. Frantz, her fiancé, was killed in battle, and she is bereft. On one of her daily visits to the cemetery, she notices a Frenchman, Adrien, placing flowers on her former love’s grave and also grieving him. Given the national frictions after the war, Adrien’s presence is rebuked by the small German community, but Anna connects with the French veteran while learning more of his mysterious past.

Co-presented by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.
