Hello, Dolly! (1969)

Classics at the Browning

Recently glowin’ and crowin’ on Broadway with Bette and ‘dette playing the iconic titular character, Dolly has been back where she belonged of late, which now includes the Browning Cinema. Playing Dolly in the film version, which is about to celebrate its golden anniversary, is Barbra Streisand, who is a matchmaker in 1890s New York City. Among her latest clients are the cantankerous "half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau) and a young artist named Ambrose (Tommy Tune), who is in love with Horace's niece, Ermengarde (Joyce Ames). As Dolly’s schemes (and hats) grow in complexity, she soon finds her own romantic interests encroaching on her work.
